Contraception: Myths and Reality

Just like most of the teenagers, you will get or already have first information about sex, pregnancy and methods of contraception not from medical specialists, but from your friends, or other peoples of your age. You may hear some useful and truthful information in this way, but there is a lot of misleading and bad information you will hear as well. And the real deal of the most common myth, concerning these problems and realities are provided below.

Myth #1
If a girl does not experience orgasm, she cannot get pregnant
Reality
Conception and pregnancy happen when a male’s sperm fertilizes a female’s egg. This has nothing to do with a female’s having orgasm.

Myth #2
A guy can not get a girl pregnant, if he does not ejaculate (if he uses the withdrawal method of contraception)
Reality
Of course, if it not likely that a girl gets pregnant, if her partner does not have ejaculation or if he pulls out before he has it. But still, pregnancy does occur sometimes, as there is some amount of sperm in a male’s pre – seminal fluid, which get into the female’s vagina long before the ejaculation, and this way a girl can become pregnant.

Myth #3
A girl does not get pregnant, when she has sex for the first time in her life.
Reality
Every female, who has menstruation periods, and thus, ovulation, run a risk of getting pregnant. It may happen even if a girl has sex for the first time, and it occurs regardless of her age or her sexual history.

Myth #4
A girl will not get pregnant if she douches after having a sexual contact.
Reality
The method using douching as a way of prevention against unplanned pregnancy is considered to be extremely ineffective one; because right after having sex the male’s sperm enters the female’s cervix, where it is not possible to reach them by any kind of douching.

Myth #5
A girl will not get pregnant, if she has sex in a standing position, or if she is on top.
Reality
The kind of a position in which sexual contact occurs does not matter much. Everything depends on natural processes, which guide the sperm towards the woman’s cervix and uterus as only it gets inside the vagina. So it does not matter if the girl is on top, or if she is lying down or standing.

Myth #6
A girl can not get pregnant, if she has sex on her “safe” days.
Reality
Every woman has her own menstrual cycle, and it is almost an impossible task to predict when the “safe” days begin and when they come to end. Moreover, sperm has an ability to stay alive in the woman’s organism up to seven days, so even if a girl has sex before the ovulation occurs, she still runs a risk of getting pregnant.

Myth #7
The birth – control pills start work as soon as a girl begins to take them.
Reality
Actually, everything depends on the day, when you start to take the birth – control pills. Moreover, it may take up to one month (one complete menstrual cycle), before you may rely on the effectiveness of these pills in preventing pregnancy. But during this period you are to take some other method of contraception.
