Side effects of BCPs

birthcontrol_pillsLike all medicines, BCPs have side effects when you taking it. There are rare but serious side effects and minor side effects. If these effects last for more than three months, you should talk to your doctor about changing to a brand of birth control pills, which may enclose a different dose of different dose of hormones.
But you shouldn’t change your pills with out consulting your doctor.

Side effect may include: serious and minor side effects.

Rare but serious side effects may include:
  1. Blood clots
  2. Abdominal pain
  3. Thromboembolism
  4. High blood pressure
  5. Gallstones
  6. Failure of birth control
  7. Heart Attacks
  8. Breast cancer risk
  9. Benign liver tumors

Minor side effects of BCPs may include:
  1. Vomiting
  2. Breast tenderness
  3. Melasma
  4. Mood changes 
  5. Weight gain
  6. Nausea
  7. Headache
  8. Depression
  9. Gallbladder disease

In any case women shouldn’t take birth control pills if they have any of these conditions:
  1. Late renal failure
  2. Jaundice
  3. Symptomatic heart valve disease
  4. Very high cholesterol
  5.  History of coronary heart disease
  6. Breast cancer or other estrogen dependent cancer
  7. Smokers

Antibiotics may interact for example:
   Ampicillin, tetracycline, erythromycin, cotrimoxazole, nitrofuratoin
  (possible interactions with this drug are still controversial)
  • Rifampicin has definite effects on estrogen levels
  • Antiepileptic drugs – for example, phenytoin, phenobarbital
  • Diarrhea or laxatives may reduce absorption of OCs
